Smart Grids represent a great opportunity for the Energy market who is facing the growing demand for energy. A systematic optimization of the entire energy system and the replacement of outdated infrastructures cannot be postponed anymore. Moreover, the harmonization of renewable energy sources must be based on sustainable values. The development of Smart Grids is to be considered essential for maximizing the efficiency of energy distribution and minimizing energy consumption. As intelligent network infrastructures Smart Grids allow the energy market to respond to the challenging management needs, as service effectiveness and security. This session will analyze the key challenges and opportunities arising from the development of Smart Grids and the roles that key stakeholder groups are likely to play in their development.

According to the new EU measures that focus on the Environment, all homes and businesses will have to be equipped with smart metering to monitor and rationalize energy consumption by 2020. In order to comply with these mandatory measures, the Energy Providers are rapidly planning and implementing Smart Metering solutions on behalf of Smart Customers and Smart Markets, with the Italy as a forerunner. M2M challenge is now to shift its focus from solutions implemented for single specific customers to solutions aimed to ensure the proper level of interoperability and standardization between all the layers across all the solutions. Succeeding in this challenge will increase the ability to successfully integrate new devices, applications and network rapidly responding to any changes that new market scenarios will require.

Urban environments able to provide intelligent public services thus improving the quality of life of their citizens. Smart Cities are sustainable, efficient and comfortable places where municipal tasks such as handling traffic, ensuring supplies, waste disposal or maintaining public safety are managed based on real-time data and on the permanent communication with their citizens.
M2M and IoT technologies are the enablers of the Smart Cities environment: sensors scattered throughout the whole city collect any kind of data such as traffic, water, energy while innovative communication capabilities provide automated information interchange between machines or between machines and control centers where the real-time data processing takes place.
Making better decisions based on real-time information leads to optimized city costs, and more efficient and environmentally friendly processes.
M2M Forum will be held in co-location with M2M + Symposium.
High level conferences examining important international case histories are the main features of the event.
The specific purpose of the initiative is to explore the new horizons of the M2M world and the latest applications of this technology.
